K-3 Garden Spring 2012

K-3 Garden Spring 2012
A cleaned out garden bed.

What a busy week!

New soil, raised beds for pumpkins, vegetable flats, wood chips... so much work to be done in the garden! Everyone has pitched in to do some part of our garden chores. A new board with weekly chores has appeared in the hallway so each class knows what needs to be done. We've had a great time getting ready for spring time in the garden! Both Kindergartens and Mrs. Cilli are handling the new raised beds especially made for our Pingry Pumpkin Patch. First, Second & Third grades have been turning garden beds, adding nutrients, spreading woodchips and aerating compacted soil. The third graders will also be using their math skills to section off the raised beds as they find the area and perimeter of the boxes. Next week we all hope to start transplanting veggie flats into the ground! Wood chips have arrived to make the garden area less muddy, a shed for housing all of our wonderful tools is on the way, our rain water catchment made by the First grade has found its way to the garden, a water source has been installed and soon someone will bravely open the composters to see what's been going on inside! Hold onto your hats and check back often because our garden is changing day by day!

Brrrrr! It was cold, but we managed to get a little more raking, digging and fertilizing done.

Our teacher finally put down the camera for one minute... Smile!

Lots of teamwork by garden groups!

Rocks to cover an unsightly drain... soon to be the home of our beautiful bird feeder from a special elf!

There's lots of raking to do and we had fun doing it!

We all worked together and a lot got done!
